There are many forms of injustice, but few are as inhumane, absurd, and illogical as hunger and malnutrition. According to the UN World Food Programme (WFP), we produce enough food to eradicate hunger. However, one-fifth of production is wasted along the distribution chain, mainly due to logistical issues.
Given these facts, there are only two possible interpretations: either hunger is a conscious decisión, or, more likely, the result of a lack of truly human, social, or Christian decision-making.
Meanwhile, the WFP warns that humanitarian aid has been at its lowest levels since 2009 and that the number of people suffering from famine continues to rise.
Simply put, more and more people are going hungry and suffering from malnutrition, and there is less and less aid. This may be another example of the inverse proportional growth of our time, but it’s intolerable.
In this context, the solidarity initiative “Pels carrers de Barcelona” (Through the streets of Barcelona) was launched in 2022, promoted by the La Salle Bonanova Residence.
One night a week, our university residents put aside their classes and exams and head out to the streets of Barcelona with bags full of food—and hope.
From the kitchen, the heart of the house, they set off by train and bus to different parts of the city. In doing so, they distribute more than just food: they seek to carry a message of hope.
See you there, On the streets of Barcelona
