Last Tuesday, February 17th, our dining hall seemed a little disoriented. It simply couldn’t figure out whether we had travelled through time or space: were we at the Winter Olympic Games? In the middle of the Louvre robbery? In the mythical town of Júzcar? On the farms of the American Old West? Or perhaps in the Roman Empire? To make things even more confusing, marine and land animals also joined the scene. A couple of mischievous monkeys climbed down from the branches to take part in the celebration, while a lively group of seahorses seemed to defy nature by breathing outside the water.
Of course, there was a simple explanation for all this delightful confusion: it was Carnival! For a while, costumes turned into play, role reversals, laughter, and celebration. Moments like these remind us that joy and shared festivities are just as necessary as the things we usually consider essential.
